She spent her youth trading her looks for attention from men, and now she doesn't know what else to do. Now she posts weird selfies of her latest plastic surgery. She used to make millions by singing and flirting. All the more so in our consumer culture of pleasure and selfies. So it can be stunning to actually end up being old yourself. I'm young." We ignore old people because they're not "in the game" of mating, business competition, etc. When we're young we think of old age as a characteristic. By 40, they're not being noticed very much. At 20 they may feel harassed by men, or they may luxuriate in all the attention. For women it can be especially hard if they were used to getting attention in youth. Maybe she's got stuck in a rut and feels hopeless. If you have difficulty you could also remind yourself that you don't know what she's suffered. Mindfulness means to actually be willing to be where you are. If you're in love you'd like someone to hear about your joy. Isn't that what you want when you feel cut off? If you're sick you'd like someone to hear about your pain. Don't attack her with a machine gun of pleasant. Is the woman cranky, or are you? Is the woman hateful, or are you? Is there a difference?īy smiling and trying to be nice you're actually being coercive: "Look, try to be nice and in return I'll be nice." That's petty. I would suggest that, if you're really willing to relate to the whole thing, practice mindfulness and note your own annoyance. It's trying to avoid and deny your experience. Trying to avoid negativity is the opposite of that. You practice dealing with your life fully. The point is usually to practice working with one's experience sanely. You don't stop seeing good and bad, but the approach to it changes. Or lock yourself away until she gathers her wits again. You might even let her cut you a little bit while you wrestle the knife out of her hands so that she doesn't hurt people and get sent to jail. But, when you hold boundaries with them, you do it as if your loving mother has gone crazy and come at you with a knife. That's not to say you let them hurt people, because that would be bad for them and others. So, if you want to suffer less, then it is smarter to be kind and loving toward cruel people. Responding with kindness and love may not seem justified, but tends to function in a way that reduces suffering in the world, including for the person who acts kindly. But this tends to cause more pain and suffering in the world, including more pain for the person who is angry and punishes. It may be justified to be angry with and punish cruel people. It might be helpful to acknowledge the difference between what is justified and what functions to get you what you want. Meditation Pics - for meditation-related images.
